Spence's Hotel - (Calcutta 1931)
Present day the Income Tax Office and CAG office housed in the erstwhile Treasury Building, is situated at the place, where stood, First Luxury Hotel of Asia that, is Spence's Hotel. It was inaugurated in 1831. It was 74 suite rooms hotel to cater business travelers. It boasted advanced facilities like flush toilet, room service (Bell attached with string to call butler). This hotel was popular with Indian Maharajas as well. The land on which Spence’s Hotel stood, was acquired by the Government in the 1880’s, and Spence’s was relocated to Wellesley Place (renamed Red Cross Place), from where it continued to operate, until it was eventually demolished unceremoniously. After acquisition of the said property, a massive and magnificent building was constructed on the said plot of land between 1882 and 1884, during the tenure of Lord Ripon as the Governor General of the British India.
